The Boston Bruins announced his passing on Friday, September 18, 2026. Gimenez had joined the organization in July as Director of Hockey Operations, Collective Bargaining Agreement, a newly created position focused on contract negotiations, salary-cap management, collective bargaining agreement compliance and player acquisition strategy.
Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney remembered Gimenez as someone who quickly earned the respect of colleagues throughout his career.
“Alex earned the respect of all who knew and worked with him throughout his career and, most importantly, he was a wonderful person who will be greatly missed,” Sweeney said in the Bruins’ statement.
Gimenez’s time with Boston was brief, having arrived only two months before his death. The organization said his intelligence, thoughtfulness and character were apparent from the moment he joined the Bruins.

His work with the Red Sox included a number of baseball operations roles, culminating in his position as Assistant Director of Major League Operations and Pro Scouting. The Red Sox also expressed their grief following news of his death, remembering him as an important member of their baseball operations family for more than a decade.
