Melissa Bowman Obituary, Death – Harrisonburg LPN Remembered for Her Family, Compassion and Community Service

Melissa Ann Bowman, 37, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. She was remembered as a caring LPN, devoted mother, loving fiancé and active member of her community.

Born December 13, 1988, in Rockingham, Virginia, Melissa was the daughter of Dale “Buckwheat” William Bowman and the late Theresea Faye Cave Bowman. Her family said she found a meaningful career in nursing after graduating from Massanutten Technical Center and Lord Fairfax Community College.

As an LPN, Melissa particularly valued the relationships she developed while assisting her patients. Her work allowed her to combine her caring nature with a desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

Melissa Bowman’s Passions and Interests

Away from her nursing career, Melissa enjoyed creative activities, particularly quilting, sewing and embroidery. She often spent time shopping for materials connected to those hobbies.

She also loved traveling, with cruises being among her favorite ways to explore new places. Another source of enjoyment was attending Banana Ball games, where she could share memorable experiences with family and friends.

Animals were another important part of Melissa’s life. She loved her sugar gliders and pet crested gecko, while her loyal dog Zeus held a special place in her heart. Zeus preceded her in death.

Little Hill Farms

In 2018, Melissa joined Ethan and the Bowman family in opening and operating Little Hill Farms.

The family venture became another meaningful part of her life and reflected her willingness to work alongside those closest to her.

Her fiancé, Ethan Landon Showalter, remained an important part of Melissa’s life, as did her daughter, McKenzie Paula Bowman.

Community Involvement

Melissa was also committed to giving her time to community organizations.

She volunteered with Bridgewater Challenger Baseball, the Rockingham County Fair and the Singers Glen Lawn Party. Through those activities, she contributed her time to events and programs that brought people together in the local community.

She attended Gospel Hill Mennonite Church.

Family Remembering Melissa

Melissa is survived by her father, Dale “Buckwheat” William Bowman; her fiancé, Ethan Landon Showalter; her daughter, McKenzie Paula Bowman; her siblings, Sarah Dean and William Bowman; and her “GiGi,” Bonnie Bowman.

She also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will remember her with love.

Melissa was preceded in death by her mother, Theresea Faye Cave Bowman, as well as her grandparents Paul Bowman, Ruie Cave and Frank Cave, and her step-grandfather Lindy Stover.

Funeral and Visitation

A funeral service celebrating Melissa’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at Greenmount Covenant Brethren Church. Pastor Dan Horning will officiate, with burial to follow at Greenmount Cemetery.

Friends and family may pay their respects from noon until 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 22, at the funeral home. Members of Melissa’s family will be intermittently present throughout the day.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bridgewater Challenger Baseball at 759 Weavers Road, Rockingham, VA 22802.

Melissa Ann Bowman leaves behind memories shaped by her compassion for patients, devotion to her family, creativity, love of travel and animals, and willingness to serve her community. At 37, her passing marks a deeply felt loss for those who knew her, while the relationships and experiences she shared will remain part of the legacy she leaves behind.
